Are you a newbie in programming? Did you ever want to learn programming but you don’t know where to start due to the hundreds of programming languages out there? If so, then this article is for you, because I’m going to talk about the different Aspects programming and the necessary languages required for each of those aspects.

What is a programming language?

A programming language is a series of instructions or commands which computer programmers/ scientists use to communicate with the computer there by performing a given task.

Programming on the other hand is the act of giving a computer instruction in order to execute a task. The concept of programming is Soo broad which I don’t think can fit inside one post.

How to choose a programming language to learn.

In recent times, programming has been classified into different categories in which one can specialize in. These categories in programming are

  • Web development.
    • front end web development.
    • Back-end web development.
    • Full stack web development.
    • Cloud Engineering.
  • Mobile app development.
  • Game development.
  • Data analysis.
  • Machine learning and AI specialist.
  • Embedded systems programming.

Each of these categories mentioned above have their own languages in which their programmers specialize in. I’m going to be treating that in this post.

Web development.

This is a programmer who builds websites and other applications that run on the web like quiz applications, shopping-carts, voting websites, school management systems, and much more.

These developers specialize in programming languages like Html, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, bootstrap (for front end), combined with a Framework like React Js, Angular js, Vue js, or vanilla js then PHP (Node.js can be used as a suitable alternative), MySQL for back end. The front end developers usually deal with the user interface (looks) and the user experience (UX) of the site, while the back end deals with the data handling, processing and storing of the site. Some programmers specialize only in front end development while some specialize in back-end.

Developers who specializes in both front and backend web development are full stack web developers.

Web development is actually the easiest kind of development to kick of your career as a freelancer. You can learn web development for free in websites like Free code camp, W3schools, or Sololearn. You can also pick up a paid course at udemy for your web development.

Here’s a summary of web development languages and their uses.

  • Html: page structure.
  • Css: Design.
  • JavaScript: DOM
  • manipulation.
  • php, python, java, Node js or ruby: back end, form processing.
  • SQL: database handling.

These are the basics of web development in which every web developer must know, or have a basic idea of.

One of the most important parts of learning web development is getting to practice it. Since it’s very a broad course, you’ll need alot of guides in practicing it. Fortunately, our blog has alot of free guides on web development which you can take advantage of. Here’s a list of some of them

You can also view our Home page for more web applications tutorials from us and ensure to leave a comment if it helped you out.

Mobile app development

programmers under this category usually create mobile applications for Android and iOS devices. The Android developers uses programming languages like java and kotlin while the iOS developers uses swift and objective C.

Languages like python and a Javascript framework like React Native can also be used for mobile app development.

Game development.

This is about creating games either for desktop, game consoles or mobile games. Programmers under this category are well experienced and good with their algorithms. Languages used in this category are python, JavaScript and c++ and unity.

Embedded systems programming.

What is an embedded system?

An embedded system is a small computer that forms part of a larger system, device or machine. Its purpose is to control the device and to allow a user to interact with it. They tend to have one, or a limited number of tasks that they can perform.

An Example of these embedded systems is your smart watch. Programming languages used in embedded systems programming is C++ and python.

Data Analysis.

These are programmers who mostly deal with data structures and how to organize manipulate database data. They deal with data models and normalization of data. They specialize in database languages like mySQL, mongoDB, Ms access etc. For those interested in learning more about databases and how it works, I’ve found a good MySQL beginners course at future learn where you can learn all about Databases and structured Query Languages all for free
